Protein Basics
Protein – likely the most misunderstood nutrient in our diet and the most complex to digest. And yet most consumers today have become aware of the need for healthy amounts of protein as a part of their daily routine. But gram for gram, all proteins do not deliver the same nutritional value. In fact, there is a rather large gap between the poorest proteins and the best.
Clinical studies have shown repeatedly that proteins derived from plant sources are nutritionally inferior to proteins coming from milk, egg, fish and meat. In addition to inferior amino acid structure, digestion of plant proteins can be very difficult and lengthy, and in high volume can actually distress the lining of the intestinal tract as well – an action many already dealing with bowel distress and disease just don’t need.
- Gram for gram, all proteins do not deliver the same nutritional value.
So what to do? How do you go about feeding your body healthy amounts of protein daily while maximizing efficient digestion to absorb all the protein you eat, keeping your cells happy with lots of high quality protein while maintaining a healthy intestinal tract? Power Crunch unique high-dh hydrolyzed whey protein may be exactly what you are looking for.
Hydrolyzed Protein
So what is hydrolyzed whey protein, and how does it relate to the daily protein nutrition we all need? Hydrolysis is the natural intestinal process of breaking down whole proteins found in food and supplements into smaller proteins called peptides, and it happens to all protein we eat. In fact, it must happen in order for our cells to absorb protein and put it to work throughout the body. The more extensively hydrolyzed, the easier it is to absorb protein and transport it into the blood, brain, muscles and the rest of our body’s tissues. The key is to hydrolyze protein into the smallest peptides called dipeptides and tripeptides and stop, without going the last step turning it into free amino acids. Di and tripeptides have only 2 or 3 amino acids. Most cells in the body prefer these small peptides over free amino acids for several complex reasons.
What does high-dh mean? DH is the Degree of Hydrolysis, which indicates the extent to which protein molecules have been reduced in size. Higher DH means more di and tripeptides which allows more rapid and efficient absorption. In order to be absorbed, protein must be hydrolyzed down to amino acids or to the smallest peptides, di and tripeptides.
Whole proteins, including whey isolates, concentrates, caseins, soy, and blends are large proteins and naturally contain little to no Micro Peptides, and no di and tripeptides. A Micro Peptide is a protein with no more than 6-8 aminos which quickly hydrolyzes to di and tripeptides after consumption. Power Crunch® high-dh hydrolyzed whey protein is predominantly composed of Micro Peptides, of which 40% or more are di and tripeptides.
With this in mind, it is easy to see why protein that is already extensively hydrolyzed into a state of direct absorption is so much more effective than whole protein which takes many hours to digest. Of major importance to most consumers, rapidly absorbed high-dh hydrolyzed whey protein avoids the gas, cramps and other bowel distress quite often associated with consuming whole proteins, especially from plant sources.

More Protein Science
Why are Micro Peptides and di and tripeptides so valuable in protein nutrition? Di and tripeptides target the PEPT-1 transporter, a single carrier which rapidly transports over 8,400 different di and tripeptides. Compare that efficiency to amino acid transporters which work very slowly and each of which transports only one or two amino acids. Large whole proteins in food and non-hydrolyzed protein supplements rely heavily on amino acid transporters which are far more specific and transport only a fraction of what PEPT-1 transporters do.
The speed and efficiency of the PEPT-1 transport system allows for faster delivery of protein throughout the body and bypasses other systems that can limit the transport of protein that has been reduced to amino acids.
Power Crunch – Protein Genius
What is the "genius" of Power Crunch? Our wide variety of products utilize the most advanced and unique form of protein called "high-dh hydrolyzed whey protein." These di and tripeptides and Micro Peptides harness the power of PEPT-1 transporters which deliver rapid absorption and delivery of protein throughout the body. Recent clinical studies have also indicated that di and tripeptides carry additional information in a way amino acids do not, allowing for a cellular "conversation" amino acids are not privy to. This brilliant protein nourishes your cells, allowing them to grow and thrive at the molecular level. When you choose Power Crunch, you are choosing the newest and most advanced super-protein nutrition that supports your body more efficiently and effectively. Now that’s pretty smart!
