About butyric acid

Butyric acid, also called butanoic acid, is a short-chain saturated fatty acid. The body makes it naturally when gut bacteria ferment parts of food that are not digested, mainly certain carbohydrates. Diets with resistant starch, inulin and other fermentable fibre encourage this. It is also found in milk and dairy foods, though amounts from an everyday diet can be small.
